• What is Bextra? (FDA Recalled Drug)

Bextra, also known as valdecoxib, is a prescribed medication used to alleviate the problems associated with arthritis and other inflammation-related conditions. The drug helps reduce the pain of swelling and fever without causing stomach irritation like aspirin. NSAIDs work by blocking a chemical in the body called cycloxgenase. Cylooxgenase-1, or COX-1, shields the stomach from the harsh hydrochloric acid it contains, while COX-2, is found in inflamed tissues and causes the pain of fever, infection and arthritis....

The Highway to Health - Bumped Heads

I recently had a reader send me this comment: "As a full-time dad I have to deal with just about every minor illness my two children pickup, everything from a bump on the head to chicken pox. I found the Highway to Health ebook very useful and it's one of the first things I reach for when something goes wrong!" Mr John Bradbury United Kingdom It got me thinking - although the Highway to Health does cover headaches, perhaps going into a little more detail about 'bumps on the head' would be useful....

Over Medication; Grandma is on Drugs

It is very interesting this hypochondriac attitude which permeates our society? The power of suggestion is alive and well? "Do not feel good today, take a drug?" Oh that made you feel a different way? Take another drug? Oh those two together caused another feeling you do not like, my oh my, here is a third drug? You know these tests prove conclusive that this is not working and something is wrong, we should try this other drug too? Crazy, are you buying all this. I remember visiting my grandmother's friend who had a drug regiment, she took something like 13 different pills some every 4 hours, some every six, some every 8, one every twelve and the rest once per day?...

Thimerosal: Autism and Mercury Poisoning Side Effects?

The continued use of mercury based preservatives in vaccines is dangerous and drug companies know it. However, instead of removing the mercury, some have used 30 to 50 times as much as the EPA set for the highest limit. It is especially dangerous to the developing brain of a child, and in 22 years the number of children diagnosed with autism (which has been shown to reflect amounts of mercury preservatives in vaccines given in the first 18 months of life) rose from 1 autistic child out of every 10,000 to 1 autistic child out of every 250....

    Ephedra Product Ban

Ephedra is a naturally occuring herbal dietary supplement that has been marketed as a weight loss drug. The principal active ingredient is an amphetamine-like compound. Because it has been marketed as an herbal supplement and not a drug, you may not have considered talking to your doctor about it, but if you have been using Ephedra or any dietary supplement containing ephedrine alkaloids, such as ephedra, ma huang, Sida cordifolia, and pinellia, stop immediately and consult a doctor! The FDA has advised consumers to stop using these dietary supplements and published a final ruling in 2004 to ban the sale of all supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids....

    Mind Altering

"It's a chemical imbalance." I've heard those words so many times in the last decade, it's becoming routine for Doctors to blame everything on it. Have you been listening to the News, the talk shows, the media, and other people lately. It's pathetic. I am not a doctor, or scientist of any kind. I am just an ordinary man just listening. I guess that would make me a shrink, right? Nope, I not that either. Now, I grew up in a house where mother took prescription drugs by the handfuls. She had 3 doctors, 2 or 3 pharmacist, and naturally she smoked 3 packs of cigarettes per day....

FDA Orders Search Engines to Stop Online Pharmacies

How Does Online Pharmacies Affect Pharmacy Leaders? With cheaper drugs made available online, big pharmacy companies are losing control of their monopolistic control over the pharmacy industry. They are not able to compete with these online pharmacies with their exorbitant drug prices. FDA moves in and tries to protect these companies from online pharmacies by trying to censor online information from users. What FDA does not know about the internet is: nobody controls internet and the spread of information over the web....

    Thalidomide

Thalidomide is responsible for causing more than 10,000 children to be born with birth defects. A West German Pharmaceutical Company first introduced Thalidomide as a sedative or sleep aid in 1957, and scientific testing determined that Thalidomide was safe, before it was introduced. Thalidomide is dangerous (an understatement) and it is being prescribed even today. Thalidomide is being tested and has been used as a part of a drug (cocktail) to treat ADHD. The Medical (North American Health Care Industry) presents itself as the scientific way to health....

The Last Line of Defense Against Medication Errors: What You Need to Know to Keep your Family Safe

This is a true story. Yesterday, I picked up a new antibiotic prescription for my daughter from my local pharmacy. (We recently adopted my daughter from India where she had recurrent ear infections resulting in severe hearing loss. And, she is about to undergo the second of several planned surgeries in order to try to repair the damage.) Before putting her to sleep, I got the new medication out of the bag, glanced at the instructions, and prepared to give her the drug according to the instructions on the label....
